Do you actually save money? Yes.
Do you pay in other ways? Yes.
I just finished the debacle of moving one of my client’s sites over to Godaddy so they could save money on hosting. After nearly SIX hours (and conflicting information from nearly every customer support person we talked to) we succeeded.
Can you get hosting for $4 a month from Godaddy, or Bluehost, etc? Yes, you can. But is it appropriate hosting for your site?
Confidence in your host and support will give you peace of mind.
Why You Need Managed Hosting
Big hosts like Bluehost, Godaddy and Hostgator were created to serve mid level companies (7,000-10,000 employees). This makes them capable but with WAY too many complicated options for the layperson. The tech help is hard to access and unreliable. It’s really the same as the state of computers in the early 2000s’.
Add On Expenses:
When we installed my client’s site, we got a big red stop sign on all the browsers saying “DO NOT PROCEED- THIS SITE IS UNSAFE”. It wasn’t true of course, but we needed to get a security certificate in order for her site to even appear online. That was an additional $300 that she hadn’t budgeted for. If she had basic hosting from us, the cost for the whole year (including SSL, Backups, Support, etc.) would have cost only $300.
php is constantly being tested for vulnerabilities and updated. Much like the WordPress core, it should be updated immediately for security reasons. With WordPress core, you can update from your dashboard and only occasionally will it break things. php can only be updated from the server. In order to keep costs low, big discount hosting companies will delay your update UNTIL YOU SPECIFICALLY REQUEST it.
Want to know why this is important? See my post on security.
There are no second chances with cheap hosts. If you don’t manage and schedule your own backups, you could lose your entire site.
When my client called, they told her that she could add on a domain to her current hosting, but what they didn’t tell her was how complicated that was going to make even installing an SSL certificate.
My client requested an SSL certificate (and paid for it) and received an email from Godaddy that it had been installed and applied. When I went into her settings though, I found that it had not actually been applied. After a second request we got another email saying that it had been applied. This time it was true.
When people look at $25 a month, it seems like a lot. But is it worth 6 hours on the phone (or chat) feeling totally lost and panicked, trying to get some stranger to fix your site?
Only you know that answer.
How are they able to offer such a cheap price?
They can offer a discount because they allocate their resources for sites to share the same server space. If you start getting a major amount of traffic, your $4 will change because the other sites utilizing that space will not be able to load quickly.
For small sites, server space is hardly an issue, but when you get many users, the server has to pull up your data again and again. Youtube’s server cost was estimated to be Approximately $4 million in storage costs per year in 2012!
All this is well and good if you want to post videos on YouTube or pictures on Facebook. In fact, when you have videos for your site, we recommend that you use an embedded window like the one above. Not only will it ease the load on your server, but your videos will load faster.
The point is, you can get a cheaper hosting package, but it will cost you in frustration, and often times, it isn’t cheaper once you factor in SSL certificate cost and any emergency help you might need to pay for if your site crashes.
